A strong chat prompt gives enough context to respond usefully without scripting every word. The simplest formula is: context + goal + tone + boundary + next action.
Give context
State the relevant setting or situation in one or two sentences. For fiction, identify where the scene takes place. For brainstorming, explain the audience and constraint. Use invented details rather than sensitive personal data.
Name the goal
Ask for one outcome at a time: a question, three ideas, a short scene, a counterargument, or a summary. Vague requests like “make this better” give the model no useful success condition.
Set the tone
Choose two or three qualities such as warm, concise, curious, direct, or lightly humorous. If tone matters, provide one short example line.
State boundaries
Tell the character what to avoid: personal data, professional advice, a sensitive topic, real-person impersonation, or a style you do not enjoy. Boundaries are more reliable when specific.
Ask for the next action
End with an explicit instruction: “Ask me one question,” “Offer three options,” or “Continue for two paragraphs and pause for my choice.”
Example transformations
Vague
“Talk to me about travel.”
More useful
“We are planning a fictional weekend in a coastal town. Keep the tone curious and practical. Do not ask for real dates, addresses, or payment details. Give me three themes for the trip, then ask which one I prefer.”
When replies become repetitive
- Add a new concrete constraint or piece of scene information.
- Ask the character to summarize the current goal before continuing.
- Change the task type—from advice to questions, or from narration to dialogue.
- Reset a contradictory scene instead of adding more instructions.
- Accept that repetition may reflect model or context limitations.
