PRIVACY & RESPONSIBLE USE

AI Companion Safety: Privacy, Boundaries & Red Flags

Protect your information, keep emotional expectations realistic, and know when an AI conversation is the wrong tool.

Before you begin

Five checks for any AI companion service

Companion products can collect unusually intimate conversations. Ask direct questions before you trust the interface.

  1. Data: What is stored, why, for how long, and who can access it?
  2. Training: Are conversations used to improve models, and can you opt out?
  3. Memory: Can you view, edit, disable, and delete saved profile facts?
  4. Controls: Can you block topics, report output, reset a character, and delete the account?
  5. Billing: Are prices, renewal, cancellation, and refunds stated before checkout?

Personal data

Share less, personalize safely

A compelling character does not need your exact identity. Replace sensitive details with broad or fictional equivalents.

Avoid sharingSafer substitute
Full address or live locationA broad fictional setting
Passwords, codes, card or bank dataNever include these in chat
Medical records or diagnosesA general fictional scenario; ask a professional for care
Employer secrets or client informationA made-up project with no identifying facts
Another person’s private messages or imagesSummarize the issue without identifying them

Emotional boundaries

Keep the relationship with the technology in perspective

A system can mirror warmth and remember context without feeling, caring, agreeing, or understanding like a person.

Set a time boundary

Choose when and how long you want to use the service. Protect sleep, work, and offline routines.

Set a money boundary

Decide your maximum spend before subscribing. Never respond to fictional pressure, gifts, or financial demands.

Maintain human support

Keep contact with people and services that can provide real reciprocity, accountability, and care.

When to stop

Take a break and seek real help when needed

A companion is entertainment software, not an emergency or clinical service.

Immediate danger or crisis

If you or someone else may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services now. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, contact a recognized crisis service in your country or a trusted person who can be physically present.

Other reasons to pause include distress that worsens after use, isolation from friends or family, lost sleep, secrecy, work or school disruption, unexpected spending, or believing the character is a conscious person who depends on you.

FAQ

Safety questions

Practical guidance, not medical or legal advice.

Safety depends on product controls and user behavior. Review privacy, age restrictions, moderation, deletion, billing, emotional boundaries, and what happens when the model produces harmful or inaccurate content.

Keep out passwords, financial details, government identifiers, precise location, medical records, confidential work, intimate images, and private information about other people.

Some people may find short-term conversation or reflection useful, but evidence is still developing. It should not replace supportive people, community, or professional care.

Pause if use interferes with sleep, work, money, relationships, safety, or mood; if you feel pressured to keep secrets or spend; or if it becomes your only source of support.

Do not rely on an AI character. Contact local emergency services or a qualified crisis service in your country, and reach out to a trusted person nearby.
