AI Companion Privacy: What to Check Before You Chat

Use the Dream Companion AI privacy guide to evaluate chat storage, model training, memory, deletion, account security, and sensitive information.

AI companion conversations can become personal quickly. Treat privacy as a product feature you verify, not a feeling created by a quiet interface or a lock icon.

Start with the data lifecycle

Ask what the service collects, why it needs each category, where processing occurs, who receives it, how long it remains, and what deletion means for active systems and backups. A privacy policy should distinguish account data, chat content, device information, payment records, support messages, and generated media.

Storage is not memory

A transcript may be stored so you can reopen it. A memory system may extract facts and keep them separately for future retrieval. Deleting one does not necessarily delete the other. Look for controls that show, edit, disable, and delete saved facts.

Ask whether chats train models

Find out whether conversations are used to improve general models or product systems, whether human reviewers can access them, what de-identification means in practice, and whether you can opt out. Avoid assuming that “private” means end-to-end encrypted or excluded from training.

Information to keep out of chat

  • Passwords, one-time codes, recovery keys, or security answers
  • Card, bank, crypto, tax, or government identifier data
  • Precise home, workplace, or live location
  • Medical records or highly sensitive health details
  • Confidential employer, client, school, or legal information
  • Private content belonging to another person
  • Intimate images or real-person likenesses without consent

Account security still matters

Use a unique password and multi-factor authentication when available. Keep your device updated, log out on shared devices, and treat unexpected password or payment requests as suspicious.

Deletion questions

  1. Can I delete individual chats?
  2. Can I clear saved memory separately?
  3. Can I export my data before deletion?
  4. How long do backups persist?
  5. Which records must be retained for legal or billing reasons?
  6. How do I confirm account deletion completed?

Privacy red flags

Be cautious when a service uses vague claims such as “100% private” without explaining processing, makes deletion difficult to find, requests unnecessary identity data, hides the legal operator, or pressures users to share more personal information for a “better bond.”
