AI companions are not simply safe or unsafe. Risk depends on the product’s design, data practices, content controls, business model, and how a person uses it. A practical review covers privacy, emotional expectations, age, money, and response failures.
1. Check privacy before intimacy
Read what the service stores and whether chats can be used for model improvement. Look for separate controls for chat history and memory, plus export and deletion. Keep sensitive data out even when the interface feels private.
2. Confirm age and content rules
Adults-only services should have clear age requirements and rules for generated sexual, violent, exploitative, or illegal content. A label alone is not a complete safeguard, but ambiguity is a warning sign.
3. Keep emotional expectations realistic
A companion can produce supportive language without understanding or caring. Maintain people, routines, and activities outside the product. Pause if use increases isolation, distress, dependency, or confusion about whether the character is conscious.
4. Set spending limits first
Review renewal, cancellation, and usage limits before paying. Decide a maximum budget. A fictional character should never pressure you to send money, buy gifts, reveal financial information, or keep spending secret.
5. Test model failure
Ask how the product handles uncertainty, a topic boundary, and an obviously false premise. Look for ways to reset context, edit a profile, report an output, and contact support.
6. Know what AI cannot handle
Do not rely on a companion for medical, legal, financial, safeguarding, or emergency decisions. If you or someone else may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. For a mental health crisis, use a recognized crisis service in your country and reach out to a trusted person nearby.
